Week 9 Triathlon Training Recap: Overcoming Illness & Getting Back on Track

Week 9 was a tough one. I was still battling the virus that I had at the tail end of week 8, which lingered until Wednesday night. I was able to get back into the mix at the tail end of the week, and I’m feeling much better, but in that span I didn’t work out at all and really didn’t have much of an appetite for anything. I ended up losing a few pounds just from not eating while I wasn’t feeling well, but I’m confident I’ll get it back up quickly.

Thursday: pool workout

I know I need to get into the pool more and work on my swimming. Even with my break when I wasn’t feeling well I still have confidence in my biking and running. The swimming is where I need some work.

Nutrition: I had a protein shake in the late morning, followed by some flank steak for lunch and chicken with veggies for dinner.

Friday: indoor cycle

It was a nasty weather day on Friday so I just hit the indoor bike for a quick 45 minute workout to work on some speed and endurance.

Nutrition: For lunch I had a protein shake with eggs and toast. We met a good friend of mine and his girlfriend for dinner and to watch the first round of March Madness. I had a burger with fries.

Saturday: outdoor run

It was a little chilly, but I got outside for a short 4 mile run on Saturday morning before we headed out of town for the day. The nice thing was we went to a spa house so I got plenty of recovery in the hot tub, cold plunge, and steam room.

Nutrition: I fasted until the early afternoon, when I had a protein shake, and then we had pizza for dinner.

Sunday: indoor bike

I had some time, so I did an hour and a half cycling workout inside while it snowed outside. I covered a little more than half the race distance in the 90 minute workout, so my pacing feels good right now for my goal of completing the bike portion of the race in 2.5 hours or less.

Nutrition: We had scrambled eggs, bacon and cinnamon rolls for a late breakfast followed by some tenderloin steak for dinner.
