Vacation, Alumni Basketball & Training Setback: Two Weeks of Triathlon Prep
We had a stretch of vacation so I decided to lump these two weeks together. We spent 7 days in Curacao, which was incredible. If I could do it again, I would have brought my running shoes and done some running in the mornings before it got too hot, but it was awesome!
Monday: Strength training
Nutrition: I ate eggs with toast and a cup of greek yogurt for lunch and a garlic chicken dinner that Maddie made.
Tuesday: Swim workout
Before leaving on our trip I did a swim workout to try to build endurance in the pool. Swimming will easily be the toughest part of the race and I need to find some drills to help with my breath work to not get so exhausted as quickly.
Nutrition: We went to a Brazilian steak house on our way to the airport to kick off vacation. If you’ve ever been, you know I got more than enough protein.
Wednesday-Wednesday: Vacation
We did lots of walking and moved around quite a bit, but other than a couple quick body weight workouts in the morning I didn’t do any major workouts. I did a tiny bit of open water swimming in the ocean, but didn’t want to stray too far from the shore.
Nutrition: I for sure enjoyed vacation and didn’t restrict myself at all. We enjoyed great food and drinks without thinking twice.
Thursday: None
It wasn’t that I didn’t want to workout, but with some weather delays, we didn’t get back home from our trip until just after 5am and I had a full work day with meetings from 9-4. By the time I got home I was running on fumes and decided any attempt at exercise wouldn’t be beneficial.
Nutrition: Spaghetti with turkey meatballs for dinner. Quest protein bar for a snack.
I was so tired that I wasn’t even hungry most of the day. We had an early dinner before putting our feet up and having an early bed time.
Friday: Bike sprint workout
I didn’t have a lot of time after work, but I had time to get in about 40 minutes of sprints on the bike.
Nutrition: I had a lunch of scrambled eggs with toast, a protein bar in the afternoon and then dinner as part of our alumni basketball weekend with a bunch of my old teammates at a local sports bar. I had wings and a few drinks.
Saturday: Basketball
This was the main day of the alumni basketball gathering, with the first event being a game between all the former players who were back for the weekend.
Nutrition: I had a banana and protein shake before the game in the morning and then lunch at the same sports bar with more wings and drinks before steak and chicken tacos for dinner. It was a late night having fun with all the alumni who were back.
Sunday: None
After a late night on Saturday there wasn’t much of a chance I was going to go through the motions of working out.
Nutrition: Late breakfast of french toast bake, fruit and sausage followed by pizza late in the afternoon. I was more focused on rehydrating.
This was a terrible 2 weeks for my triathlon training. Not only did I fail to workout quite a bit on vacation and even when I got back, the nutrition piece was really bad. I’m not a huge drinker, but having casual drinks almost every night on vacation and then more drinks for alumni basketball was not a good stretch. I’m looking forward to getting back in the gym and more importantly, back in the kitchen this week and beyond.
